ABOUT
The Full Story
Years ago I used to make soaps, lip balms and other products with a friend. Parenthood waylaid that small business, but after harvesting honey one year I cleaned and harvested the beeswax as well - this was the next natural step! I'll still use harvested beeswax when I can, but I do have to buy organic beeswax now and again to keep up with demand. Want to learn a little more? How about a little question and answer period?
What flavors do you have?
They change frequently, and are all made with natural food-safe flavor oils. Tried and true regulars include Sweet Almond, Honey Almond, Cherry Almond, Vanilla Almond, Cherry Lime, Lavender Lemonade and Vanilla Mint. Warm winter flavors include Spiced Honey Chai, Peppermint Cocoa, Berry Cobbler and Chocolate Cherry. Fun spring and summer flavors include Cherry Berry, Cherry Blossom, Strawberry and CocoBerry Lime.
How much are your lip balms, and how do I pay?
Lip balms are $3 each. I can offer discounts on orders of 10 balms or more, and I currently offer kraft cardboard gift boxes to create 2-packs or 4-packs upon request. We accept PayPal on this site, but we also happily accept Venmo, or even cash for orders that are picked up or delivered in or around Cedarburg, WI, which save us both time and money. Please feel free to reach out at dontgetlippylipbalm@gmail.com to make arrangements!
How do you come up with your flavors?
Some are pretty general (albeit maybe more delicious than big-name brands!) but the more creative flavors are mostly by trial and error and by test sampling. Nod to my samplers - you know who you are! Love you guys!
Do your lip balms have SPF protection?
Our products have not been tested for SPF. For extended sun exposure, please use a tested sunscreen! The base ingredients all have natural SPF (beeswax has between 5 and 30 SPF, and coconut oil is estimated at 2 to 8 SPF). I also add raspberry seed oil which is a natural ingredient known to add an extra SPF boost. It is estimated on its own to have an SPF of between 28 and 50 for UVA rays and up to SPF 8 for UVB rays. That said, you cannot accurately calculate the SPF of a homemade lip balm without using a specialized laboratory to test it; I don't want to mislead users about the level of sun protection provided.
Are your lip balms organic and/or gluten free?
With occasional exceptions, our balms are made with all organic ingredients. (Only one of my flavor suppliers is not certified organic.) And yes, all the lip balms use gluten free ingredients!
Does Rob really make these?
Haha - no, he considers himself more "quality control." And he's one of my go-to testers.
Then why is it called Rob's "Don't Get Lippy Wit' Me" Lip Balm?
Our honey is called "Rob's 'Heck, Yeah' Honey." We've discussed shortening the lip balm name, but our advisory panel (our boys) think the name Rob is hilarious for some reason. So we've stuck with it.
How do I know they're good?
I've been making and distributing lip balms for several years, and was frequently encouraged to turn it into a small business, especially by people who were gifted the balms and didn't know me personally so didn't know how to replenish. I've been delighted with the feedback from everyone who's purchased or been gifted a balm so far. I also don't mess with the base recipe - it's smooth and luxurious, and it's important that customers know that's what they're getting regardless of the flavor they choose.
Regarding flavor, a balm has to pass through my stringent group of taste-testers before I'll start making it in larger batches. I do have some flavors that are more popular than others, but IMHO they're all delicious! Teens are among my best clients...and they can be a hard group to please! In fact, among my favorite "testimonials" are my son Jace's friend who, anytime he sees someone using a big name balm, snatches it out of their hand, throws it in the garbage, and tells them to get some of the good stuff from Jace. I also received this exchange earlier this year from my son Joah in a chat with his college friends:
